This beautifully constructed album, the debut offering from Welsh singer Duffy, is the most appealing of the young soul sirens encroaching upon the music scene at present. Suggestions that this album is just a sixties pastiche are quite frankly ornery. The title track does, admittedly, sound like a lost transmission that took decades to get through; yet these songs are effective and stunning. Set to some wonderful orchestral settings and some exquisite underplayed guitar work this awesome wall of sound is truly stunning. However, it is Duffy's amazing voice which makes the songs so satisfying to listen to. She has the ability to be top of her game if the her next few albums are as well crafted as this one. A cracker of a debut!
